Like most of my books, this one is set in the fictional hilltowns of Western Massachusetts. I begin it with a jolt — a week after being released from prison, Al Kitchen is found dead on a back country road.
The story goes back to when Al returns home after serving seventeen years for the beating death of a well-liked guy in a botched robbery. He lives with his cousin, Bernie Tucker, an outcast herself, and keeps busy bike riding and painting the house his loyal grandmother left him. Everywhere he goes, Al is confronted by people who hate him.
The story leads up to Al’s death. And then we and the town’s honest police chief get to solve who is responsible. (I love it when readers tell me I fooled them until the end.)
To add a little more depth to this story, I decided to make Al change for the better when he was locked away He spent much of his time reading books from the prison library. Al had plenty of time to feel authentic remorse for not only killing a man but a dark secret he shares with a woman.
However, nobody in the town believes that could have happened. Al would still be the reckless punk who has no boundaries.
Sometimes a story is too good to have only one book. The Unforgiving Town is a sequel to The Sacred Dog. Specifically, I wanted to know what happens to Al, the book’s bad guy, after he gets out of prison. Each book stands on its own although I would be happy if you read them both.
